Mr. Wendel needs your help!

Filed under: General — Grayson @ 3:43 pm

Dear Barkley Square,

My name is Emily Anderson and this little guy is my puppy, Mr. Wendel.  He is (I think) 5 months old, and I adopted him from a toy breed rescue in Nebraska.  He is the product of in-breeding and neglect in a puppy mill.  When I got him, he had an eye infection in both eyes and a bad staph infection around his groin from sitting in his waste.  He had ear mites and his hair was very matted.  He has a congenital ocular defect that has deformed him.  His right eye is undersized, underdeveloped, and completely blind.  His left eye is oversized to the point where he is unable to fully close his eye.  This condition has caused him to develop severe corneal pigmentation resulting in visual impairment in his left eye, not to mention the discomfort that he feels.  The vet said that he can only see shadows and if he doesn’t get a surgery called a “canthoplasty” he will become completely blind in the next year or so.  He is on an oral antibiotic for his staph infection, a topical one for his eye infection, a thick eye lubricant, and a drop to increase tear production.  He gets all of those twice a day.  He really enjoys taking his medication (especially his yummy oral antibiotic).  The topical ones that lubricate his eye really make him feel good because his eye is so dry most of the time.  I put him on his side and apply the ointment and rub his eye for 20 minutes or so and he just about falls asleep!  His surgery will be VERY expensive and it is money that we unfortunately don’t have.

Please contact us at info@barkleysquarebakery.com if you are interested in helping this little guy out!

Afghan Dog!

Filed under: Adoptable Pets — Grayson @ 12:32 pm

This is an amazing story about a dog in Afghanistan that now needs a home here in the US…

Hi Friends and Animal Lovers,

I looking for a loving home for my dog, Princess Buttercup. I adopted Buttercup during my assignment in Afghanistan in January 2005.  Buttercup was just a few weeks old when some of my embassy colleagues  found her being used as a soccer ball by a young Afghan man - her young little body skidding across Kabul’s frozen streets. Miraculously, she had no injuries or illness, just a little dry skin and malnutrition. Within days of her rescure, a diet of sardines, canned dog food and bottled water, she fattened up and started to grow. Buttercup stayed with me during my last five months in Kabul and then came with me to Harare, Zimbabwe for my three year assignment.

In Zimbabwe, Buttercup really flourished. She is now four and half years old and fully grown at around 30 pounds. She is completely housebroken, has been fixed and has all her shots. She’s very affectionate, loves people and played well with my housekeeper’s kids- even her toddler who loved to grab and pull.

As I transitioned back to America (and a tiny apartment in Dupont Circle), Buttercup stayed with a friend in Zimbabwe, enjoying the sunshine and large yard. Now she’s coming to America in early September, but my current living arrangments make it impossible for me to have her, and I know that I’m being sent back to Afghanistan for my next assignment and can’t take her with me. As much as I love her, I also want a stable, loving home that’s best for her.

If your family is looking for a loving dog that is still young enough to be healthy and energetic, but has outgrown the puppy stage (chewing shoes, accidents in the house, etc.), Buttercup might be the right dog for you.

Please share this message with any one you know that might be interested.  I’d love to talk with anyone who wants more information.

Thank you so much for your help in finding my girl the best possible home!!

Sad story…

Filed under: Dogs — Grayson @ 2:34 pm

Many of you may have seen this on the news here in DC recently.  It is a very sad commentary on the continued mistreatment of dogs and, indeed, all animals on behalf of humans….

This week, WHS Humane Law Enforcement Officer Eve Russell was dispatched to a dumpster where a DC resident had reported seeing a dog’s head sticking amongst the garbage. She arrived within moments to find a dog alive in the dumpster, her face swollen and bloodied and covered in flies, her body tightly wrapped and taped in a plastic garbage bag. The heat was stifling, the situation horrific.

The dog had thrown in the dumpster to die after “losing” a dog fight. She was nonetheless a fighter, having chewed her way out of the bag enough to stick her head and leg out, and was clinging to her life.

When Officer Russell pulled the dog out of the dumpster and cut the garbage bag and duct tape off of her body, the dog leaned against her, unable to stand upright on her own. She looked up to make eye contact and slightly wagged her tail. Officer Russell raced her across town to Friendship Hospital for Animals where she remains in intensive nursing care. The staff there reports her as gentle and, most importantly, on the mend.

It is a sad reality of the brutality of illegal dog fighting: when a dog loses a fight, he or she is typically discarded in this cruel and gruesome manner. WHS is committed to ending this inhumane and illegal practice on our city streets through education, legislation, and law enforcement.

Officer Russell has named the dog Trooper. The forgiveness of animals is a remarkable gift, and Trooper’s willingness to trust those of us trying to save her life, despite her previous experience with human beings, is inspiring. She is giving as much to us as we are to her.

Trooper has a long fight ahead of her, and her rehabilitation and medical care will be tremendously expensive. How could we not invest in her worthwhile life? These expenses will come from – and may likely deplete – “Sophie’s Fund,” a special fund designated for emergency medical care of homeless animals. We will work diligently to give her every opportunity to rehabilitate physically and emotionally, and eventually to live a life as a companion animal with a loving human relationship.

We need your help in order to help animals like Trooper, and to stop this from happening to others. Your contribution will help in these areas:

  • Keep Sophie’s fund alive and available to others who will follow Trooper into emergency medical care.
  • Provide the ongoing support needed for Officer Russell and all of her colleagues who work to care for these animals.
  • Support the emergency hot line that enabled the DC resident to report this crime in a timely manner, ultimately making Trooper’s miraculous rescue possible.

Donations to help Trooper can be made online by clicking here or visiting:

Thank you for your help and support.
